Behavior Management is a process that includes:
Why is it important? Residents / clients displaying behaviors which presents danger, distress, or decline in functioning need behavioral interventions to create an environment which allows staff and the resident work together effectively. All behaviors have a reason or purpose to help fulfill a need. Understanding the reason(s) for a particular behavior and learning ways to manage it or even eliminate it reduces stress, frustration, and conflict for both residents and staff. It is also necessary to develop and use an effective behavior management process to comply with several OBRA Federal Regulations including F222 (Free from Chemical Restraints), F319 & 320 (Treatment for Psychosocial difficulty), F329 (Unnecessary drugs), F330 & F331 (Antipsychotic drug use), and F406 (Specialized rehab services).
